If I google my first and last names...
The first 2 and a half pages of web hits are all me. Yeah, I have an unusual name.
But the first image is not me. The second and third are, and then the next dozen or so are some people I’m friends with on Facebook.
yestimgunn replied to your post: Question for academic followers
I make no claims to expertise on this but the grad student conference I’m on the planning committee for certainly had a panel of us reading submissions and deciding who was getting in. Maybe it’s worded that way to exclude pre-formed panels?
Thanks, I think you may be right. I’m supposed to include a list of the panel...

Question for academic followers
How do I know if a conference has selected its participants by jury?
I got two papers accepted to conferences in the next couple of months, but my graduate school will only provide travel funds for one. The other one is a graduate student conference, and my department doesn’t give money for those, so I expect I will have to tell them I can’t come.
There is another source I can apply...

Anecdotal, but I see lower grades from good students out of Canadian schools than American ones.
Yeah, I’m not really generalizing. These are just the only two examples I am familiar with. I’m just having trouble adjusting to students who expect As for making a minimal effort, and the fact that few of the humanities...

On undergrads and technology
On one level, I don’t care too much if students are not paying attention when I’m lecturing, because if they don’t want to learn, it’s their own problem. They are the ones who will suffer when they’re graded.
But then I know, realistically, that if you let all hell break loose, and don’t try to force them to make an effort, you as the instructor are going to...

Got a message from the director of my museum
My archaeologist friends in Egypt are fine, and everyone thinks it’s best if they just stay put. They are far enough out in the countryside that it’s fairly calm there.
There were some undergrads from the university in Cairo and Alexandria, but they got out on a charter flight yesterday.
These people are obviously not more important than the people who live there, but it’s a...

My teeth
I’m 29, and I have 10-12 fillings. Last time I saw a dentist was three years ago, and it was such a terrible experience I haven’t been back. A mistake, I’m sure. I had to get 8 fillings, and that dentist was just terrible. She kept trying to drill into teeth that weren’t frozen - maybe some people can deal with that, but I can’t, and I was paying for the local...

Help me obsess about my teeth!
Reply or reblog with your age and how many fillings you have. Feel free to add any other information about your dental hygiene or other procedures you’ve had done, etc.
It’s not a contest, I’m just interested in the range of experiences. I’ll add my own shortly.
Here’s a little motivation:

Fashion is an aspect of art, and in particular an aspect of art which has a solid, practical relationship to day-to-day life at least half of the time. This means that it is part of culture, and culture is important. It’s important for people—it doesn’t have to be everyone, it can just be some people—to be actively engaged with culture, making it and interacting...

I already have too many grown up things to do in...
I need to get groceries (perhaps multiple times!), take my cat to the vet, finally get a Michigan driver’s license, make a doctor’s appointment and go to it, etc.
On top of, like, writing my dissertation and remembering to bathe and stuff.
Now I have to go to the dentist too?
IT’S TOO MUCH.

OMG
I think there is hole in one of my teeth that didn’t used to be there.
But it’s way at the back on the top so I can’t look in the mirror.
I haven’t been to the dentist in 3 years, because the last time I went, the dentist I had was incompetent and it was a really hellish experience.
I don’t want to go.

Not true. “Nemo” means “no man” or “no one.” This is best illustrated by the phrase “nemo me impune lacessit”, which means “No one/no man attacks me with impunity.” (This happens...

Him: Really? How can she call him her boyfriend if she’s not in love with him?
Me: Huh? They’ve been dating for a while. They’re a couple.
Him: But doesn’t calling someone your boyfriend imply that you love him?
Me: No?
Him: So it’s just about sexual exclusivity...

archaeology:
There have been wildly varying accounts of who the looters/vandals actually were. Here is one report, from Egyptology News:
The German newsaper Der Tagesspiegel (thanks Homer) via Google Translate says that the director of the Egyptian Museum, Wafaa el-Saddik, has told one of their journalists that security guards and police officers were responsible for the looting of the Egyptian...

Who’s an archaeologist. His phone apparently never went out. But he’s way in the south (near Aswan), so he’s far from the action.
He told her that there they’re hearing that the death toll in Cairo alone so far is around 100. That’s a lot more than the 62 figure for the whole country the Canadian media is reporting.
itsonreserve replied to your post: Oh dear, unfortunate former fuck buddy just messaged me on AIM.
Rawr? Was he Charles “Upchuck” Ruttheimer, III?
I don’t know who that is, but it sounds like a fair description. Okay, I’ll google it now.
